John Manuck, President and CEO of Techmer PM, was the guest speaker at the UCLA Anderson School of Management on January 31, 2011. The MBA-level course taught by Eric Flamholtz, PhD, deals with the issues and problems involved in developing and managing entrepreneurial organizations.
Manuck’s presentation, entitled The Evolution: Managing Entrepreneurial Organizations, described the history of Techmer PM and the challenges the manufacturing company faced as it grew from its start-up in 1981 with one production line in Los Angeles, California, to a recognized worldwide supplier to the plastics and fiber industries. Mr. Manuck recounted the lessons that were learned as the plastics industry began consolidating, new markets opened, and new competitors entered the market. The presentation was followed by an open discussion with the students on growing pains and turning points. It ended with a favorite quote, “Fate deals the cards, but you play the hand.”
