Program Extended to Include RSA Global and Three New Institutions

CLINTON, Tenn., May 5, 2016 – Techmer PM, a leading materials design company, is partnering with global design firm IDEO to expand the Bill Moggridge Awards program as part of Techmer PM’s ongoing support of design education and materials innovation.

Mr. Moggridge was co-founder of IDEO, director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and a pioneer in interaction design. His family and corporate sponsors, IDEO and Techmer PM, are expanding the program to increase the impact of the award.

The changes include expanding the award to the Royal Society of the Arts (RSA) Global from RSA-US and adding three new institutions where Mr. Moggridge’s teaching and presence had a significant impact: the Royal College of Art in London where he was a visiting professor in interaction design; Stanford d.school where he was an associate professor; and California College of the Arts in San Francisco where he received an honorary doctorate.

The Bill Moggridge Awards began in 2014 with the RSA Student Design program to celebrate the life and work of the design visionary.

A recipient of the RSA Student Design Award a half century ago, Mr. Moggridge credited the honor with giving him the confidence to start his own design firm in London in 1969, adding a second office ten years later in Palo Alto, California. In 1991, IDEO was created when he joined his company with those of David Kelley and Mike Nuttall.

“Techmer PM is proud to partner with IDEO to sponsor these awards and help cultivate the next generation of designers,” said Techmer PM vice president David Turner. “Expanding the program is an important extension of our work in the design community. We look forward to seeing how the students will use their award and how it impacts their work.” These additional $10,000 awards are intended to be used by the recipients for travel or major project development projects. They will be conferred by designated members of each institution based upon the student’s display of design innovation, project collaboration, and overall portfolio strength. California College of the Arts will announce its award winner on May 5, followed by RSA Global on June 20. The other two institutions will announce winners later this year.

Previous Bill Moggridge Award recipients include Sam Bertain and Leslie Green, students of the California College of the Arts (2014), and Kreshav Raamaswami of the Pratt Institute, New York City (2015).
